Glenburn Estate - A Plantation Retreat with Breathtaking Views
Set in the Himalayas overlooking the dramatic Kanchenjunga Mountain Range, the Glenburn Estate produces some of the world's finest leaves. Founded by a Scottish company in 1860, the sprawling estate is owned today by the Prakash clan, a pioneering Indian tea planting family. At 3,700ft, the forest setting is paradise for hikers and bird-watchers, and the ancient kingdom of Sikkim lies across the river. The family have been hosting guests in their home for many years now, and the setting and hospitality is hard to beat in this region of India. There are 4 rooms in the main Planters Bungalow and 2 rooms in the Glenburn Lodge which is located down on the river bank. Delicious food is served throughout the day, and is included in the price, and of course there is high tea. Breakfast and lunch can be served on the large veranda that encircles the Bungalow, or in the gardens, and picnic baskets can be arranged. A tea tour is a must and takes you from the tea nurseries all the way through to the picking and processing stage, ending with a tea tasting session. Glenburn located at just over 1000 meters and consequently has a clement climate all year round and never gets as cold as Darjeeling. October to March allows for the best views of Kanchenjunga in the distance
